100 Mile Onewheel Pint Review

In May, I finally did it. After a year and a half of deliberation, I bought a Onewheel Pint. While I do enjoy occasional mountain bike rides, and running on a semi-regular basis, I am neither an extreme sports enthusiast nor an athlete. As a frugal, 40 year old parent of 2 elementary-age kiddos, I also find it hard to justify spending money on myself these days, especially for things I don’t need. Do any of these factors make me regret my decision? Not at all!

Eighteenth

I feel like I say this every year, but it’s hard to wrap my head around the fact that Amy and I said “I do” 18 years ago. Our anniversaries seem to come by faster and faster, but there’s nobody else I’d rather be on this adventure with.

Open Floor Surgery

So relieved! About a month ago, our AC drain line backed up, the shutoff failed, and quite a bit of water leaked into our return vent. I thought I caught it in time and vacuumed up the water. A week or so later, the floors in the hall and living room started buckling. That laminate flooring runs through most of the house. It’s not available anymore and we only had a few salvage pieces from when we renovated the kitchen.

Be Unbeatable Together

After a run of almost 3 years, this is my final day as at Paylocity. As I was chatting with one of my squads about the transition last week, someone noted that I’ve always been the team optimist. To avoid getting choked up, I asked, “Do you know what the plural of y’all is?” I knew that nobody in that group was from the South, so I let the pause linger for a moment and then replied, “I’m going to miss all y’all.”

Office Shed Budget Breakdown

It’s been over a month now since I moved my desk from the master bedroom, into our new office shed in the back yard. I’ve been dragging my feet on this wrap up post as, well, there are still a few details left to wrap up. Even without transom window trim, decking in front of the sliding glass door, or a rear gutter though, having 160 sqft of detached office/living space for our family of 4 has been a game changer.

The Book Story Continues

It’s amazing to me that The Principles of Beautiful Web Design is now its fourth edition. I never imagined that my basic introduction to layout, color, texture, type, and imagery for the web would still be going strong after nearly 14 years. Alex Walker did a fantastic job giving the book a much-needed 2020 overhaul…

Poolside Office Shed

It’s finally happening! Before Amy and I even made an offer on our mid-century Orlando bungalow a couple years ago, there were two big improvements we knew we wanted to make. The first was to remodel and expand the kitchen, and the other was to build an air-conditioned, office and guest space next to the pool in the backyard.

A Decade in Product

Happy New Year! It’s hard to believe the 2020s have already arrived. As I reflect on my career journey so far, the theme for the last decade was product and user experience.

Cookie Monster Trunk or Treat

On Halloween back in 2018, our family had a blast at a neighborhood Trunk or Treat block party event that some awesome people in our neighborhood put together. We had so much fun that we decided then that if they did it again, we wanted to be part of the fun. Fast forward to this year and October ended up being one of the toughest months of events, work commitments, and viruses to date for our family. It was the middle of the month, the block party was on, we had committed to decorate a trunk…and we had no idea what to make.

Still Running

Like most parents of young children, there are a lot of things which I used to really enjoy, that I have trouble finding time for these days. I don’t travel to many conferences, I don’t take on as many DIY projects, and I’m definitely not writing as much as I used to on here. One thing that I’ve tried to maintain is my consistently infrequent running routine. Back in 2013, I wrote a post sharing some of my running data. I’ve continued to track all of my runs since then, so I was curious how I’ve been doing. As it turns out, not so bad…
